چکیده

The extensive bibliography on experimental syphilis and spiroch~eta pallida has been brought together and reviewed recently by Hoffmann, 1 Neisser, 2 R. Kraus, 3 Glass, 4 and Buschke and Fischer, 5 in whose publications the present state of our knowledge on these subjects can be readily found. The weight of opinion is strongly in favor of accepting the transmissibility of the syphilitic virus to the lower and the higher monkeys, and to the eyes of rabbits, guinea-pigs 6 and dogs. ~ The almost constant demonstration of spiroch~eta pallida in syphilitic products and in the organs of foetuses and infants inheriting active forms of syphilis, and the close association of the spiroch~et~e with the specific lesions, has led the majority of workers in this field to look upon the pallida as the probable cause of syphilis. The criticisms which have been made of this view have, in the main, not weakened it seriously, and must, in the nature of things, remain as criticisms until such time as the pallida is obtained in pure cultivations with which inoculation tests can be carried out. Apparently we are no nearer the cultivation of the pallida than we were immediately after its discovery. The criticism that has, in the past, aroused the largest degree of interest holds that the tissue spirals, exhibited by silver impregna-

Agglutination of Treponema Pallidum in Human Syphilis

The results observed with this strain of Treponema pallidum may be stated as follows: 1. Normal human serum did not agglutinate this culture of Treponema pallidum in dilutions of 1:5 or higher; equal parts of treponema culture and normal serum (dilution 1:2) resulted in agglutination in about 50 per cent of the sera. With the strain of Treponema pallidum used in this study specific agglutinatio...

Immobilization of Treponema Pallidum in Vitro by Antibody Produced in Syphilitic Infection

Treponema pallida were extracted from rabbit testicular syphilomas and suspended in a special medium in which the organisms remain motile and infectious for several days. On incubation of such suspensions with syphilitic rabbit or human sera and guinea pig complement, the treponemes became non-motile and lost their capacity to infect rabbits. Various factors affecting this immobilization have b...

A Study of Complement Fixation in Syphilis with Spirochæta Culture Antigens

It is our purpose in this communication to give the results of some work upon complement fixation in syphilitic and other sera, using specific antigens prepared from pure cultures of Spirochceta pallida, Spirochceta pertenuis, and Spirochceta microdentia. The results are compared with those obtained with the same sera and a stock antigen used in our routine Wassermann tests, this antigen consis...

Ophthalmology

At a recent meeting of the Ophthalmological Society held in Edinburgh,2 Sydney Stephenson read a most instructive paper on the subject of the " spirochaeta pallida in relation to the syphilitic affections of the eye. He prefers to call the organism of Schaudinn by its newer name of treponema pallidum, which organism has now been found in all forms and stages of syphilis, whether acquired or inh...
